Nettle from “Nettletown”

I live and work in the town called “Koprivnica”. City of Koprivnica was named after the eponymous creek named “Koprivnica”. “Koprivnica” is actually a diminutive of the word nettle. Koprivnica (Nettletown) is rich in wild nettles. Therefore, we are bound to noble this plant because it is one of the symbols of our little town.

Nettle occurs in old Germanic mythology as a symbol of the lightning flash (as you know lighting also cause quite a stir). A folk popular interpretation says: “the lightning is so well aware of nettles, as a man too, so they both prefers to avoid it” and also popular Croatian proverb says “A lightning won’t strike into stinging nettle”.

In some alpine areas, it was written (based on folk mythology and poetry) that the peasants have putted nettles in front of the house when the storm was approaching so the lightning would not hit the house. Also, according to folks, it was believed that the nettle was in connection with love passion that has to burn in a heart with devastating flame. In old German manuscript «Language of Flowers» says: “that one who in heart feel love have to carry a nettle” so they put nettle seeds in love potion.

Nettle has large therapeutic properties. This plant is known, above all, to have a broad spectrum of activity and is good for regulating and reducing problems caused by frequent urination, stimulates the kidneys, purifies the blood, strengthens the immune system, reduces allergic reactions, improves digestion, and has a soothing effect.

According to some historical sources, they used nettle in the brewery and placed it in containers for fermentation in order to prevent the beer not become sour during the bad weather.

Nettle is rich in vitamin C, B, K, (dependent on habitat), various minerals such as iron Fe, magnesium Mg, phosphorus P, and manganese Mn, and also contains a lot of plant enzymes, phytosterols and other elements known to the modern pharmaceutical industry and food industry.

Today we prepare nettle in various ways. Nettle can be prepared as an herbal tea; and you can make syrups and juices of it. Also, you can find it in cosmetics (in hair, skin and nail products) and drugs and in different meals like soups, salads, sauce, etc.

That’s why are we in „Pampa-tea“ proud of nettle and produce probably the best nettle tea that comes from “Nettletown”.
